Improve Efficiency in Your Cooling Tower Fan System

Industrial cooling towers are a critical component of a wide range of industries and, as a result, ensuring that they are operating as efficiently as possible is a great way to reduce cost and increase the overall efficiency of an industry. One of the best ways to ensure that a cooling tower is running as efficiently as possible is to ensure that the particular fan being utilized within the tower is the best choice for the tower’s application. In today’s post, we are going to go over the two types of fans most commonly used in industrial cooling applications, axial fans and centrifugal fans, and explain exactly why an axial fan is the best choice for the majority of cooling tower designs. Do You Know Your Fan Types?

Before we get into why axial fans are better than centrifugal fans in the majority of applications, we felt it would be a good idea to explain the differences between these two fan types.

  • Centrifugal Fans: Invented in 1832 by Russian military engineer Lieutenant General Alexander Sablukov, centrifugal fans have been used in a wide variety of applications. Often called blowers or fan-blowers, centrifugal fans increase the flow of an air stream by utilizing a fan blade within a housing. Through this process, air is moved radially through the fan, with the direction of the flowing air changed by 90 degrees from the direction of the incoming air. Airflow created by centrifugal fans is directed through a system of ducts or tubes to create a higher pressure airflow than axial fans. This means that despite a lower flow rate, centrifugal fans create a steadier airstream than their axial cousins.
  • Axial Fans: Axial fans have been around for ages, dating back to the horizontal windmill designs made famous across the European continent. These fans are so named for the direction of the airflow that they create. Axial fans utilize individual fan blades that are mounted on a central, rotating point. Through this design, axial fan blades draw in air parallel to the axis and force air back out in the same direction. These fans are excellent at producing airflow with a high flow rate (large volume of airflow), however, the airflow that they create is of low pressure. Axial fans require a low power input for operation and are the most common type of fan assembly found in industrial cooling towers.
